CELCOM-KDU “MOU” SIGNING CEREMONY OF “LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY DEVELOPERS CHALLENGE CAMPUS PROGRAM”

3 APRIL 2011 - Celcom Axiata Berhad, the most experienced and leading mobile telecommunications service provider in the country, is proud to announce its collaboration with KDU University College during the “Memorandum of Understanding” (MOU) signing ceremony of League of Extraordinary Developers Challenge (LEDC) Campus Program, held in conjunction with KDU Orientation Day, at KDU Penang recently. This collaboration marks an inaugural moment for Celcom LEDC to embark on higher level institution to educate the young and nurture the talents of tomorrow’s leader as an aspiring “technopreneur”.

LEDC is a driving developer program that encourages mobile application innovation. In 2010, LEDC has organized various content application challenges and conducted workshops on different Operating System (OS) platforms such as Blackberry, Android and Symbian. After receiving numerous positive feedbacks from the lecturers and professors who have attended Celcom’s previous LEDC’s workshops, the LEDC is bringing the momentum to the academics arena to generate greater synergies as a way of giving back to the community.

As part of Celcom’s effort in supporting the government’s initiative to educate and empower young developers, the LEDC Campus Program is designed to help unleash the best talents out of the university students; be it challenging technical skills and/or picking their brains on creativity. Besides encouraging innovation, Celcom LEDC also provides these students to gain direct experience from the Telco industry, as well as to prepare them and foster the right mindset when they enter the workforce after graduation.

Celcom Axiata Berhad’s Chief Marketing Officer, Chee Pok Jin who graced the signing ceremony event said, “With encouraging response since 2010, Celcom needs to fast-track mobile application adoption that can deliver the “next generation” content to mobile phones, offering affordable devices to the customers. In Celcom’s support to spur local content conceived by smart young talents, the young generation of developers are able to realise their visions by participating in the LEDC Campus Program; whereby the winning contents will be commercialised by Celcom and be offered to our customers. This is in line with Celcom’s objective to build brand awareness in association to innovation application through community events. More importantly, the LEDC Campus Program will help propel the close knitted community among the university students to eventually become Celcom LEDC evangelist.”

A catalyst in incubating and nurturing Malaysian mobile application developers, the LEDC provides compelling business and marketing opportunities as well as an excellent platform for young content developers to showcase their creative applications. Additionally, Celcom’s fundamental goal is aimed at increasing general awareness of LEDC in the students’ arena as well as to drive innovation mind of the young.

“With collaborations from leading companies like Celcom, we hope students will grasp these opportunities to share knowledge, do new things, search for innovation, materialize their innovative ideas and turn it into profit-making businesses for themselves”, Dr. Chong Beng Keok, Principal of KDU College Penang added.

To nurture the community of young entrepreneurs within the mobile content industry, the LEDC Campus Program will provide technical trainings on mobile development for the computer science and engineering students. In addition, marketing training on Mobile Applications and Services Go-To-Market will also be provided to help assist the students in exploring avenues that can promote their mobile contents as well as Celcom’s products.

The winning developers will have their applications developed under the guidance and mentoring of industry experts, followed by an opportunity for an exclusive revenue sharing contract with Celcom of up to 80:20. Ample promotion and commercialization of applications and services will be given to the winning developers.
